Xiang-jiao
"Banana"I'm learning Chinese, by way of fortune cookies. ;-)
Today's fortune?
"With every deed you are sowing a seed, though the harvest you may not see."
True enough. A good reminder.
That's all, folks.

Oh, you too? I've learnt "cucumber" and "mosquito", but my retention of such trivia is measured in seconds. However, such things come in handy for the stuff I'm doing at work. Fortune cookies and the beta Chinese translator at Google.
I wonder how long it will take before someone discovers that my test data consist of things like "cucumber" and the phrase (in Arabic), "I like monkeys".

Which just begs the question of what exactly are you doing at work?! ;-)
And like you, my retention does not last longer than a few seconds, certainly not long enough to make a complete sentence out of the words learned. And besides, when was the last time you learned a verb? So complete sentences are pretty much out of the question anyway. But when I do finally visit Asia one day, I plan to carry a fist full of these to impress the locals. I'm sure these will be just as useful as any phrasebook.
